This was one of my first major gigs as a copywriter, so I keep it here for nostalgic reasons. Sometimes I have to update my portfolio, and it brings me great joy to see this. We were a team of 3 writers, and each of us had to write up to 140 headlines per day.
We used to all congregate in the cafeteria, first thing in the morning, just to sit together and write. We bounced ideas off of each other, and sometimes (by subconscious mishap and a very conscious respect for the Wordsmith across the table) totally stole each other’s ideas. Sometimes those ideas became better; most times they were perfect as is.
When you’re writing for weekly print mailers, all of the padding makes the killer ideas stand out to get chosen.
